Our graduate assistant and Marketing Intelligence master student Priscilla Nornoo had the opportunity to attend the Becoming Everything You Are (BEYA) conference.
The BEYA conference is an annual event that focuses on promoting excellence and diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The conference brings together professionals, students, educators, and employers to celebrate achievements and discuss advancements in STEM, particularly highlighting the contributions of African Americans and other underrepresented groups. The conference features networking opportunities, workshops, panel discussions, career fairs, and award ceremonies.

We asked Priscilla a few questions about her experience attending the BEYA conference

What was the standout event for you during the conference? I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend the BEYA conference. One aspect that truly left a lasting impression on me was the dynamic atmosphere of the career fair. Walking through the aisles, I encountered a plethora of esteemed organizations, including the CIA, Raytheon, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, and many more. Witnessing fellow students engaging in meaningful conversations and networking with professionals from industries aligned with our interests was both inspiring and invaluable. The exchange of ideas and experiences at the career fair reinforced my passion for pursuing a career in my chosen field and provided me with valuable insights into potential career paths. I also found the Security Clearance panel discussion to be particularly enlightening. Professionals with extensive experience in government roles provided valuable insights into the intricacies of security clearances, offering guidance on the process of obtaining one and delving into its significance within various sectors. Their expertise shed light on the nuances of security clearances, equipping attendees with a deeper understanding of this vital aspect of many career paths.
What were the key lessons you took away from the conference? Attending the conference reinforced the significance of networking in my mind. Through interactions with professionals and fellow attendees, I came to understand firsthand how networking catalyzes personal and professional growth. It's not just about making connections; it's about cultivating relationships that can open doors to opportunities, collaborations, and mentorship. This realization has underscored the importance of actively engaging in networking activities as a strategic tool for advancing my career aspirations.
