Get Up, Dress Up: More Than Just First Impressions

Last week, the Department of Marketing at Towson University hosted its annual Get Up, Dress Up networking event and honestly, it was one of those moments that reminds you why being part of the MKGI program goes beyond just classes and assignments.
The idea behind the event is simple: help students understand how to make a strong first impression. But what made it impactful was how real and practical it felt.
We had the chance to hear directly from alumni who were once in our position and are now working across different areas of marketing. Instead of generic advice, they shared what actually matters when you step into the professional world for the first time : how you present yourself, how you communicate, and how small details can make a big difference.
One thing that stood out to me is that first impressions aren’t just about dressing well. It’s about confidence, clarity, and being intentional in how you show up whether it’s in an interview, a networking conversation, or even your first day on the job.
After the panel, we moved into a networking session, which is always the part that pushes you a bit out

of your comfort zone. But that’s exactly the point. It gave us a chance to apply what we just learned, start conversations, and build real connections with professionals who genuinely wanted to help.
What I appreciated the most was the alumni’s willingness to give back. Showing up early in the morning, sharing their experiences openly, and taking the time to connect with students says a lot about the culture we have here.
As part of the Marketing Intelligence (MKGI) program, experiences like this make a difference. We’re not just learning concepts, we’re learning how to navigate real situations, build relationships, and position ourselves for what comes next.
A big thank you to all the panelists for their time and insights, and to everyone who showed up and made the event what it was.
